Scheduling of Wied Ghollieq confirmed

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) Board today confirmed that the high level of protection given to the valley of Wied Ghollieqa, limits of San Gwann, through the planning mechanism of scheduling should remain as approved last year.

The board turned down a request made by a land owner in the protected area to have his site removed from the scheduled boundary. Considered as ecological important, the valley of Wied Ghollieqa is a spectacle of Mediterranean flora which includes various species of shrubs and bushes.

In 2005, theAuthority had allocated through its EIPP funding nearly €35000 towards the conservation of Wied Ghollieqa so that the valley can be restored and managed as a nature reserve. The project included the planting and maintenance of around five hundred more trees, the completion of all the rubble walls and footpaths and works on an Education centre.

The board also approved a full development application for the construction of the distribution centre at Smart City Malta. This centre will connect the keen Delimara high tension cable to Smart City in order to provide the necessary power required.
