Government ‘surprised’ by Opposition’s criticism of citizenship scheme
Government says Opposition ‘was initially constructive’ over Individual Investor Programme.
The Opposition's criticism of the Individual Investor Programme has taken the Government by "surprise".
According to the Labour government, the Nationalist opposition had initially appeared "constructive" during discussions held.
"But suddenly the Opposition has changed its position," the ministry for home affairs said in a statement.
In a press conference held today, deputy leader Mario de Marco said the citizenship scheme was an attempt to make "a quick buck" and risked putting Malta's reputation at risk.
In a reaction, the ministry argued that while the change in position might "cast doubts" on the PN's true intentions, "the government will remain committed to hold discussions with the Opposition".
Home Affairs added that the Opposition's position might "hurt" the country.
"While we are always ready to take on board new suggestions, we will implement suggestions which would turn the scheme into a bureaucratic nightmare," it insisted.
De Marco insisted that the Opposition was against the programme because it does not require a serious commitment by applicants.
"We are not against attracting foreign investment. However, we are against a scheme which puts Maltese citizenship up for sale," de Marco said, adding that no other EU country has introduced a scheme which does not require applicants from making serious commitments, such us taking up residency or investing money in the economy.
On its part, the ministry said the PN had already ruined the Permanent Residence Scheme - a scheme that resulted in good wealth for the country. It insisted that the IIP was being developed in line with international experts' advice chosen after a public call.
