€81,000 spent by Local Councils on Christmas dinners over five years
Two-thirds of Local Councils spent €80,873.60 over five years (€16,174.6 each year) in Christmas dinners and receptions, 8% of which was spent by the St Julians' Local Council alone.
Weekly newspaper Illum reports that however, according to information tabled by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi in parliament, 24 out of the total 68 Local Councils never spent a cent on such activities between 2006 and 2010, while there were 12 others that spent less than €1,000 over the past five years.
However, other councils seem to have made up the shortfall in expenditure. The St Julians' Local Council was the highest spender, with a total sum of €6,419. Runners up were the Marsascala Local Councils (€4,073), Sta Lucija (€3,802), Hamrun (€3,728), Sliema (€3,697), and Rabat Malta (€3,265).
