In the Press: PN calls for repeal of centralisation of local warden system

The Nationalist party has called for a repeal of legal notice 153, which would see the setting up of a new centralized agency responsible for the deployment of wardens. The PN says that this move would reduce the subsidiarity of local councils and the appointment, without consultation, of the head of the agency was also a point of contention.

A European Commission spokesman has said that Brussels has yet to approve into the government's €88 million guarantee for Electrogas' construction of the power station, in terms of state air rules.

The Malta Union of Teachers has expressed concerns that a legal notice relaxing accreditation requirements for new universities could lead to sub-standard institutions being set up on an ad hoc basis.

GWU Secretary General Tony Zarb, addressing the International Labour Conference in Geneva, said that much still had to be done to fight precarious employment and poverty.

The Malta Union of Bank Employees has said that due to HSBC Malta's good performance, it is unlikey that any local jobs will be lost. The announcement came in the wake of the international bank announcing the termination of between 20,000 and 25,000 jobs world wide to reduce costs and shift its focus on Asia.
