A 68-year-old man from St Paul's Bay was handed a 9-year jail term yesterday after being found guilty of raping a seven-year-old girl in 2002. William Gatt was arrested in 2010 after an Interpol report, which was made after the girl confided in her counsellor about the trauma the crime had caused her.

Two of the three public officials involved in passing sensitive information to former minister Tonio Fenech are under investigation for breaking a directive of the public services, Directive 5, which prohibits political discussion or activity during working hours or on government premises.

A replacement for Clifford Borg Marks, the ambassador to China who resigned last week, will be announced in the coming weeks, according to foreign minister George Vella. He could not confirm or deny whether Sai Mizzi, the current envoy to China and the Far East, was a contender for the post.
