PM Joseph Muscat reiterated the excellent relationship between Malta and France and said that the Valletta Summit was an important first step in tackling the migration issue.

The Maltese Prime Minister spoke ahead of a meeting with French President Francois Hollande. The meeting, held in Castille, came after the signing of an agreement to set up an emergency trust fund of €1.8 billion to aid African nations.

Though the summit was a positive first step, Muscat said, “This is not the last and conclusive solution”.

“I expect the pledges made during this summit to be permanent,” Muscat concluded.

In his short introduction, Hollande said that he is very happy that such an important summit, on such a significant topic, was held in Malta.

The French President will be visiting Malta again for the CHOGM meetings at the end of the month.
