David Casa called on the European Commission to act on what he described as a breakdown of law and order in Malta after the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

In a statement at the European Parliament, the head of the Nationalist Party delegation said the country had "reached a point of no return”.

Casa expressed his concern about last Monday’s murder, adding that it was a calculated murder that could have been avoided.

He said that although Caruana Galizia, who had reported various scandals such as the Panama Papers, was previously subjected to threats on her life, no action or protection was offered by the state.

Casa said that over the past years, the state institutions had been weakened, and various individuals were replaced with close allies of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat. “This has weakened the police force and the courts of justice to a level never seen before in Malta,” he said.

Casa said this situation could have been avoided if the European Commission acted months ago when it was notified on the “worrying” state of the rule of law in Malta.
