Syrian government continue bombing residential areas

Syrian National Council calls for immediate ceasefire as government forces bomb residential areas and restrict medical attention.

Homs was declared a disaster area according to the main Syrian opposition group and have urged for international civilian protection.

Residential areas have been bombed for days by government forces according to the Syrian National Council (SNC).

The SNC issued a statement urging the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation and the Arab League to stop the “massacre” in Homs, to declare this area as a “humanitarian disaster area”, as well calling for an immediate ceasefire.

The SNC also said that civilians are running low on food and medical supplies. Electricity and water have also been cut off by government forces.

Activists said that more than 100 people have been killed by government forces after districts close to the city centre have been under almost constant attack and have accused government snipers for preventing medics from reaching injured protesters for treatment.

Most foreign journalists have been banned from entering the country by the Syrian government making it impossible to verify opposition claims of heavy artillery, rocket launchers and warplanes used by government forces to bomb residential neighbourhoods.

The US said that Syrian protesters would risk their safety if they surrendered to authorities.

This statement caused the Syrian government to accuse the US of backing ‘sedition and violence.
