Schwarzenegger appeals for the return of same-sex marriages

He called for weddings to begin immediately in the written argument to a federal judge, adding the state was well-equipped to perform the nuptials.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has filed a legal motion to re-introduce same sex marriages into the state, calling for weddings to begin immediately in a written form before a federal judge.

The governor, who said the state was well equipped to perform the nuptials, has garnered public support amid a legal appeal to re-establish the ban. Campaigners successfully lifted the ban on gay marriages in California on Wednesday after arguing that it violated the American Constitution.

US District Judge Vaughn Walker announced his ruling to overturn Proposition 8, which denounces the voter-approved measure denying same-sex couples the right to marry.

Schwarzenegger said the ruling was "consistent with California's long history of leading the way in recognizing the rights of gay and lesbian families to order their relationships and manage their day-to-day lives.”

The governor added the Court has already issued 18,000 marriage licenses to same-sex couples, and “Government officials can resume issuing such licenses without administrative delay or difficulty."
