Nigel Farage resigns as Ukip leader

Ukip leader Nigel Farage has resigned from post after he campaigned for UK to leave the EU

UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage has said he is standing down from his position, after he insists he has "done his bit" following the referendum vote to leave the EU last month.

Speaking at a press conference in London today, Farage said the party was in a good place and said he would not change his mind about quitting as he did after the 2015 general election. Farage had resigned from his position as leader after the May 2015 general election, but he soon changed his mind.

He also added that the UK needed a "Brexit prime minister".

“During the referendum I said I wanted my country back … now I want my life back,” Farage said.

“I have decided to stand aside as leader of Ukip. The victory for the ‘leave’ side in the referendum means that my political ambition has been achieved. I came into this struggle from business because I wanted us to be a self-governing nation, not to become a career politician,” he added.
