[WATCH] Meet your S&D MEP: Josianne Cutajar

MEP Josianne Cutajar sits down to speak about his work in the European Parliament

Labour MEP Josianne Cutajar says there is a crucial need for the European Parliament to prioritise enhanced connectivity for islands located farther away from the centre of the European Union.

Drawing from her personal experience as a Gozitan, Cutajar asserts that affordable connectivity is not only a matter of social justice but also a guarantee of mobility.

"What the plane and ship mean for islands like Malta is not the same as for countries within the centre of the European Union. Alternative transportation that is both frequent and affordable is not a viable option for everyone, particularly for member states with islands such as Malta and Gozo," explains Cutajar.

As the first Gozitan MEP elected on Malta’s ticket, she considers it her mission to find solutions for islands like Gozo, which face challenges due to their 'double insularity,' making travel a complex choice.

"Numerous Gozitans, including businesses, rely on sea travel for various purposes such as studying, working, accessing basic services, and even healthcare. There is no other option but to pay for the ship," Cutajar adds.

According to Cutajar, this is why the European Union must prioritise connectivity.

She remains steadfast in her decision to advocate for such connectivity links in various directives and the Green Deal.
