[WATCH] Meet your S&D MEP: Josianne Cutajar

Part 2 | MEP Josianne Cutajar sits down to speak about her work in the European Parliament

Labour MEP Josianne Cutajar believes that common rules and accountability are imperative in the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.

Cutajar played a key role in consultations for the historic Artificial Intelligence Act as a member of the European Committee on Transport and Tourism.

Being the first of its kind globally, the act underscores the importance of human-centric AI.

"We already see vehicles use this system to operate. AI is already among us," Cutajar stated, pointing to the prevalence of AI systems in our daily lives, particularly in autonomous vehicles such as taxi services in San Francisco, California, where self-driving technology is advancing.

The legislative initiative Cutajar worked on aims to ensure a standardised and ethical approach to deploying AI systems across diverse industries.

Cutajar highlighted examples such as algorithms, biases, and human control, emphasising the responsibility required in overseeing this technology.

"If you have a system like this causes damage, or, God forbid, someone has been hurt or even killed, who will be responsible for it?" Cutajar questioned, underlining the need for clear rules to hold individuals and entities accountable for the consequences of AI technologies.

While some argued that the industry should self-regulate, Cutajar stressed the necessity of establishing external rules to guarantee accountability.
