Labour MEP Cyrus Engerer disagrees with the frequency of resolutions in the European Parliament concerning Malta.

Engerer expressed his support for the continuous monitoring of the rule of law in the 27 member states by the parliament. Acknowledging that no country is perfect, Engerer highlighted the dynamic nature of democracy, noting that it evolves.

However, Engerer stated that he disagrees with Malta facing more than ten resolutions in a year.

“The resolutions contained crucial elements,” Engerer said, “but they acknowledge the continuous progress nor let the change within the country continue.”

He underscored his commitment to constructive criticism, even of the government from his political party, while expressing the importance of recognising and understanding the progress that has been achieved.

Engerer pointed out that noticeable progress has been made in various aspects, including appointments, constitutional changes, and the allocation of resources to courts and police.

He also highlighted the ongoing nature of the discussion surrounding the rule of law.
