GreenPark Coop Society – a co-operative community formed and owned by retailers and importers for the recovery of packaging waste have called upon the public to “crush their empty plastic bottles for recycling and stop contributing to plastic waste”.

In the words of CEO Mario Schembri: "We need to recycle more and more".

In an effort to get the ball rolling, GreenPak Coop Society and GSD Marketing Ltd (GSDM) set up a beach campaign called 'Crush Plastic Bottles' at Ghadira Bay, during which they distributed free Kristal water bottles, with one condition - that the water-drinkers crush and recycle their bottles in the appropriate recycling bins, after drinking.

The members of staff emphasised the importance of reducing plastic littering and set up three collection points on the bay, handing out special branded keychains to all 'bottle crushers' with the campaign message...but only after they properly disposed of their plastic bottles.

The campaign was primarily focused on the importance of reducing plastic pollution, optimising space in recycling bags - which we all struggle with - and increasing collection rates of bottles.

Public Affairs and Communications Manager of GSD Marketing Ltd, George Douglas Saliba said that they were "constantly working to increase recycling", something which all members of the public should make their number one priority.

“Our packaging is a valuable resource and we continuously strive to ensure that most of our packaging is recovered after use and recycled”, he said.

Schembri addressed a concern, which we all have - that of the "serious landfill issues". As has been reported in the news of late, the Mghatab landfill updates have raised many an eyebrow.

"We are optimistic that the 'Crush Plastic Bottles' campaign serves to reduce plastic littering", effectively taking positive action and thus reducing "waste sent to landfills".

Follow suit and crush your plastic bottles!
