Attempted car theft ends in warning shots fired, one man arrested

A 43-year-old man was arrested by the police followed a suspected botched car theft in Birkirkara

A 43-year-old man has been arrested by the police in connection with a botched car theft in Birkirkara.

Police were informed of suspicious activity going on in the area of tal-Infetti after reports came in of gunshots fired at around 1am. Upon their arrival on site, the two men quickly hid behind the car, whilst one of the was seen lifting up his hand and pointing “an object” towards the police.

The police’s communications office said that it was at that moment that the police fired a warning shot and the persons escaped from the scene.

A police chase ensued resulting in the arrest of a 43-year-old man, two hours later. A search for the second man is still underway.

Police suspect that the two persons had attempted to commit a car theft: the car’s quarter window had been broken and other signs of damages were noticed near the steering wheel.

A magisterial inquiry is underway.
