Roommates accused of injuring man during robbery remanded in custody

Mohamed Abudlmajed Abungab, 21 and his roommate, Ahmed Abdualsalm Alsaly, 24 were denied bail this afternoon after pleading not guilty to the charges of robbing a man of €30, his wallet, two credit cards, two ID cards and a driving licence, as well as injuring the man they robbed.

Abungab was accused of committing a crime while under probation, however his lawyer Noel Bianco argued that he had cooperated with the police. He also pointed out that Abungab was a student and had been enrolled in an academic course for over a year.

Alsahly’s defence counsel said the accused had a clean police conduct. Legal aid Christopher Chircop assisted Alsahly.

The two young men’s defence counsel requested bail for the two Libyans however prosecuting officer Nikolai Sant insisted that this should be denied over fears they would leave the country, while also noting that the nature of their crime was a serious one.

Magistrate Neville Camilleri, presiding over the case, denied the request for bail on the grounds that police investigations were under way, while agreeing that there was a risk that the accused could leave the country.
