Lawrence Gonzi’s former spokesperson was paid a €17,215 ‘consultancy fee’ for six months after his role as director of Malta’s national euro changeover committee (NECC) came to an end in January 2008.

Alan Camilleri, until recently the chairman of government investment promotion arm Malta Enterprise, was paid over €90,000 over two years to head the NECC, the body entrusted with Malta’s shift to the euro currency.

Information revealed in a parliamentary question by Labour whip Carmelo Abela, shows that Camilleri was paid a €17,215 consultant’s fee for six months, after the termination of his directorship at the NECC.

Between 2006 and 2008, Camilleri was paid Lm12,320 yearly salary (€28,697 pa) together with a €2,795 disturbance allowance in 2006 and €5,124 in 2007; and €11,181 over the two years in the form of a car allowance. After the termination of his post on 31 January, 2008, he was retained as a consultant for six months and paid €17,215.

Shortly after, Camilleri became chairman of the Dhalia property group before returning to the public sector as an executive chairman for Malta Enterprise. He presided over a €4.4 million refurbishment of the former Institute for Health Care premises at Gwardamangia, during the relocation of Malta Enterprise from its site in San Gwann. At least €1.5 million were spent in three direct orders to EMI Ltd for mechanical and electrical works, Schranz Ltd for civil works, and flooring and cladding to Hal Mann Vella.

20 July, 2014 - Joseph Schranz, managing director of Schranz Ltd writes that the allegation of a direct order being given to Schranz Ltd is not true and that the contract was awarded to the company through a competitive tender, after being invited to participate in a competitive tender for the submission of a quotation for the civil works and re-fit to house the new Malta Enterprise offices at Gwardamagia.
