The government said that it remains committed to helping Maltese businesses in Libya and safeguarding the jobs of their employees.

“The measures that this government have taken to help Maltese investment in Libya go beyond those taken by the previous administration when the Libyan revolution broke out in 2011,” they said in a statement. “A team has been set up within Malta Enterprise that is specifically focused on maintaining direct contact with those companies with a Maltese interest that are operating in Libya.”

The government said that Malta Enterprise are helping some of these companies to branch out into new African markets. Other than that, the VAT, Income Tax and Treasury Departments are providing assistance packages to those businessmen who are facing financial problems as a result of the Libyan crisis.

The measures vary from accelerated payment by the Treasury on government dues to those companies, VAT and income tax refunds, and a measure whereby troubled companies will temporarily only be asked to pay part of their taxes.
