Environment Minister says eNGOs are to be represented in a working group

Minister Leo Brincat says that environmental NGOs will be represented in a working group for the update of the sustainable development laws

Addressing an EkoSkola activity in Parliament, Environment Minister Leo Brincat announced that eNGos had accepted to be represented in a working group in order to be updated about sustainable development laws.

“The Government has welcomed the suggestions made and it is committing itself to updating sustainable development laws, which were last approved in Parliament through a unanimous agreement in 2012,” a statement said.

“We will be honouring the UN Millenium Development Goals, that will develop into targets in sustainable development, by being an example of complete co-operation,” Brincat explained.

 The minister said that it was of particular concern that one could come across people who still do not understand what sustainable development.

Brincat mentioned the UN Summit that will take place in new York, next September, and he said that various challenges would be addressed during this meeting.

 “The summit will only be considered successful if we manage to keep the same momentum and determination once the summit has passed,” Brincat said.

Brincat added that the agenda would be looking at immediate challenges as well as far-reaching issues. 

Brincat aslo stressed the importance of education in understanding the importance of and promoting sustainable development; a subject which has economic, social and cultural consequences.
