Veteran broadcaster Charles Abela Mizzi has passed away aged 81.

Valletta born Abela Mizzi joined the national broadcasting station back in 1962 as an announcer. He started off working in radio and was eventually transferred to the television programme department before being appointed as news anchor.

He spent four years reading the news and was promoted to head of news in the mid-1970s, and was head of TV programmes by 1980.

Abela Mizzi also spent two years as deputy head of Xandir Malta, and after he retired at 61, he remained at PBS on a part-time basis working in the archives section.

In 2012, the veteran broadcaster read the TVM 8pm news bulletin to celebrate the broadcasting station’s 50th anniversary.

The Nationalist Party and the Labour Party paid tribute to Abela Mizzi and expressed their condolences with his family. The parties said the veteran broadcaster would always be remembered for his distinct voice and his stellar work in the national broadcasting stations.
