Birgu Ditch rehabilitation project completed

The Birgu Ditch rehabilitation project was completed this week, 13 months after it began.

The project cost €1.04 million, 85% of which were co-financed by the EU.

Minister for justice and culture Owen Bonnici inaugurated the project, which turned a previously abandoned and overgrown moat into a series of illuminated passageways and green areas.

“This site has plenty of potential, as both a cultural and a recreational space. The project was designed to marry these two concepts while improving accessibility and linking different sections of the Cottonera heritage trail,” Bonnici said.

The walkways in the ditch allow visitors to cross between one side of the fortifications and the other, ending at Birgu’s old entrance on the Kalkara side.

“The project aims to return the site to the people, who can make use of it for recreation and education.”
