Creation of new national park ‘a source of concern’ for hunters

A proposal to add 44,000 square metres to the Inwadar natural park in Zonqor does not go down well with the FKNK

Hunting federation FKNK has expressed “concerns” over government’s proposal to add 44,000 square metres to the Inwadar natural park of which 30,000 square metres will be turned into outside development zones. This would be added to the 929,000 square metre area earmarked for the park.

“FKNK hopes that the hunters and trappers, members of the FKNK, who hunt at Żonqor won’t suffer the same fate which hunters and trappers at the Majjistral Park did,” CEO Lino Farrugia said, adding that these hunters “faced restrictions”.

Farrugia went on to add that the Majjistral Park, spread over 6,900,000 square metres, is managed by three of the 14 environment entities that wanted to ban spring hunting.

He said, that the FKNK was analysing the management brief launched by the government for consultation. “Although it does not appear that there are any plans to abolish hunting, the FKNK will nonetheless file its submission to safeguard its members’ interests,” Farrugia said.
