The Malta Union of Midwives & Nurses (MUMN) will be informing the health ministry’s permanent secretary, Joseph Rapa, of the next steps it will take at the “disappointing” situations of the election results for the position of charge nurses at Mater Dei hospital.

The health ministry in July issued a call for applications for the positions of charge nurses at Mater Dei. Applicants were informed last month via SMS that the results were available on the health ministry’s noticeboard, but were told one hour later to ignore the previous text.

In a letter sent earlier this week to Rapa, MUMN secretary general Colin Galea questioned why the results have not yet been published six weeks later.

The letter also warned that the union was ready to order industrial action if the health ministry fails to disclose the results of a call for application for the post of charge nurses by the end of the week.

With the deadline expiring today, the MUMN has called for all deputy charge nurses who applied for the initial call for applicants to meet in front of the health ministry on Wednesday, 22 December between 8:00am and 10:00 for the protest, where the union shall “present a letter to the permanent secretary, putting forward its disappoint towards this situation and inform him of the further action that it will take.”
