Four out of seven cabin crew union committee members resign

Four of the seven members commitee members of the Union of Cabin Crew (UCC) have resigned their posts in protest against the position taken by the union in it discussions with the government, MaltaToday has learnt.

On Saturday, this newspaper revealed that the UCC was meeting to discuss the possibility of announcing new industrial action in a bid to make the company accept their demands.

The demands were reported to have included a pay increase and the reinstatement of a number of part-time staff who were dismissed by the company.

When contacted, tourism minister Konrad Mizzi would not comment directly on the issue with the cabin crew but stated that if “employees and unions do not understand that they need to work with the company and the government while we implement changes to make the airline profitable, the government might have no other option but to close the company down completely and re-open with new staff”.

Multiple sources have confirmed the resignations, with one cabin crew member who spoke to this newspaper on condition of anonymity saying that they feared the union was “taking it too far”, especially given that their conditions were not among the “worst in Europe”.

Efforts to contact the president’s union proved futile.
