Former Inter Milan and Argentina captain Javier Zanetti has arrived in Malta for a six-day training camp at Luxol Grounds, Pembroke.

The Zanetti football training camp will take place from Thursday 26 March till Tuesday 31 March. The activity has been launched as part of a three-year agreement between Zanetti and the Malta Tourism Authority through which the former defender was appointed as the brand ambassador for Malta in Italy.

Through the deal, Zanetti has agreed to promote Malta as a sports tourism destination and to host football training camps during the winter months.

The Malta Tourism Authority Chairman, Dr Gavin Gulia, has welcomed Javier Zanetti to Malta for his six day training camp at Luxol Grounds, Pembroke. The Zanetti football training camp shall be taking place from Thursday 26th March till Tuesday 31st March. This will be the second such training camp and, while the first one was open to locals, this one is specifically aimed at Italians, who flew to Malta to attend the camp.

“Thanks to initiatives such as the Javier Zanetti training camps, the Italian market has remained the second largest incoming market in 2014, with an increase of over 12% when compared to 2013,” MTA chairman Gavin Gulia said. “These camps are also providing a helping hand in attracting a number of foreign tour operators who would be interested in bringing incentive groups to Malta”.

While the first training camp was open to locals, the current training camp was specifically aimed at Italians, who flew down to Malta purposely to train with Javier Zanetti and to benefit from his vast experience.

Zanetti joined Serie A club Inter Milan in 1995 and clocked up over 600 appearances for the club. With 145 appearances for Argentina, Zanetti also holds the record of the most capped history of the two-time world champions who he represented in the 1996 Olympic tournament and in the 1998 and 2002 World Cups.
