[WATCH] 64 athletes to compete for the toughest and fittest title

The Rock Throwdown, Malta’s first ever fitness event, set to take place on 27 September

Sixty-four athletes, 32 males and 32 females, will be competing in Malta’s first ever fitness event for the title of the toughest and fittest athletes.

Four events will take place on the 27th September 2014 in a bid to reveal the fittest male and female athletes.

The events will take place at the Cottonera Sports Complex, kicking off at 9am.

Athletes from various fitness centers across the island will be competing head to head and test the limits of their fitness. The athletes’ abilities will be assessed through exercises that will test agility, strength, power, speed, endurance and coordination.

Exercises will include bodyweight movements such as squats, sit-ups and pull-ups; as well as more complex movements like handstands and Olympic movements such as the snatch and clean and jerk.

As the event progresses, athletes will be eliminated until the final round where the top 16 will go head to head in a bid for the title.

“The Rock Throwdown is the first ever fitness event to hit the Island. Across the world, there are several popular events such as this one and we hope to turn it into a more international occasion over the next few years,” organisers Kyle Micallef, Yasmine Formosa, Angie Vella and Gabriel Chricop said.

“This sport is growing in popularity not only internationally but also locally, with people attending on a regular basis at the local fitness centers. What makes it even more popular is that all can take part in the exercises and sessions, regardless of size, fitness level and stamina. The only thing required is determination.”
