San Giljan lift GHGS trophy

San Giljan lifted the Ghaqda Gurnalisti Sportivi Trophy for the second year running when they beat Sirens 18-14.

In an initially closely fought encounter, Marsascala Solid Base and ta’ Xbiex Mermaids Paradise locked horns to determine who would have the edge in the Second Division this season although with one win under their belt, Marsascala were better placed. The first two sessions were low scoring affairs finishing 1-1 and 2-2 showing the relative balance between the two sides.

The third session saw Marsascala move ahead 4-1 taking the match by the scruff of the neck. The final session was also won by 5-1 with Borg Spiteri and Licari lethal on the counter for Marsascala to run out easy winners.

In a tight encounter, San Giljan and Sirens met to decide First Division status for the next round as well as fight out the Ghaqda Gurnalisti Sportivi Cup for 2010. San Giljan took the initiative in the first session running up 5-3 winners mainly through some fine finishing by Galea and Aquilina.

The second session ended 4-3 with Sirens attempting to keep in touch with the Saints largely through their prolific Hungarian Tamas Varga. In the third session, Sirens fought back to a deficit of two but a fine lob at the end of the session by Nossec made it a three goal game for the final session. Sirens’ challenge then faded with a series of brilliant counters by Toth, Nossec and Galea for a final score of 18-14.
