Diego Forlan opened the scoring on 24 minutes with a fine dipping shot which as deflected over the keeper's head into the net. On 80 minutes, Uruguay were awarded a penalty when Suarez was judged to have been felled in the box with the keeper also receiving his marching orders. Forlan made no mistake in converting the spot kick with a high strong shot. 

The icing on the cake came deep in stoppage time when Pereira tapped in from a couple of yards after an inch perfect Suarez cross to bury South Africa and end the Bafana Bafana's dream.
