CNN producer, journalists injured in Sao Paulo protests

World Cup opening day marred by violent protest in Sao Paulo.

A CNN producer and two journalists were injured during violent protests in Sao Paulo. The trio were injured when Brazilian riot police clashed with demonstrators.

Officers fired tear gas and used noise bombs in an attempt to disperse the 100-strong crowd, a spokesman for Sao Paulo state's military police said.

But two hours later, the activists had regrouped three blocks away, and were seen throwing rocks at the police and setting fire to rubbish bins.

The demonstrators were protesting against heavy public spending after government had claimed that the vast majority of funding would come from the private sector.

Taking advantage of this evening’s opening ceremony, demonstrators took to the streets to attract further attention.

Industrial action and further protests were also planned across Brazil’s 12 host cities, including a 24-hour slowdown by some airport workers in Rio de Janeiro.
