Luis Suarez scored twice to give Uruguay victory over England in Group D, all but eliminating Roy Hodgson's team.

The Liverpool striker headed Uruguay in front on 39 minutes from an Edinson Cavani cross, losing Phil Jagielka at the back post to head past Joe Hart.

Wayne Rooney, who had hit the bar from a Steven Gerrard free-kick before Uruguay scored, equalised in the second half turning in Glen Johnson's cross.

But Suarez got the winner running on to a Cavani flick to fire past Hart. The win means Uruguay join Costa Rica and Italy, who play on Friday in Recife, on three points in Group D.

Suarez almost opened the scoring from a corner forcing Hart to save at his near post.

At the other end Diego Godin was booked for a deliberate hand ball on the edge of the area and Rooney sent the free-kick just past Fernando Muslera's left-hand upright.

Raheem Sterling fouled Alvaro Pereira and Suarez went close again with the free-kick. He then drilled a clever corner to the feet of Edinson Cavani but the Paris Saint-Germain striker failed to keep his shot down.

Godin risked a second yellow card as he blocked Sturridge with an arm across the Liverpool striker's face. The referee kept his cards in his pocket and England wasted the set-piece.

On 31 minutes England so nearly broke the deadlock when Martin Caceres fouled Danny Welbeck and Rooney headed Gerrard's free-kick onto the bar from close range.

They paid for the miss because on 39 minutes Uruguay took the lead. Lodeiro started the move releasing Cavani who floated a cross the back post where Suarez pulled away from Jagielka to loop a header back over Hart.

The cross from Cavani, watched by PSG team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the crowd, had been perfect and Suarez had justified his selection just a month after surgery on his left knee.

There was almost an immediate response but Muslera got down at his near post to save from Welbeck as England poured forward forcing four quick corners.

At the start of the second half Suarez again tried to score direct from a corner with Hart desperately scrambling the ball off of his line. Suarez then shot wide and Hart saved from Cavani as Uruguay looked for the second goal.

England were not finished though and Muslera saved Rooney's fierce shot from the edge of the six-yard box. Leigton Baines was increasingly threatening down the left and his Everton team-mate Ross Barkley joined him on the pitch replacing Sterling.

The equaliser came on 75 minutes through Rooney. Liverpool pair Glen Johnson and Sturridge combined down the right with the full-back driving into the area and crossing for Rooney to score from inside the six-yard box.

But Suarez struck again with five minutes left to get the dramatic winner. Muslera's long punt forward was flicked on by Cavani and Suarez out-paced Cahill before shooting past Hart.
