New general manager for Corinthia Hotel Khartoum announced

Corinthia Hotels has announced the appointment of Christopher H. Newberry as general manager of its first five-star hotel in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum, the Corinthia Hotel Khartoum, also known as the Burj Al Fateh.

In a company statement issued this afternoon, Corinthia explained how Newberry was “a highly regarded veteran of the international hotel industry” and had to date enjoyed a successful career as a general manager and senior executive within the hospitality sector.

From an early career with Hilton International as executive assistant manager of the London Hilton on Park Lane, Newberry was promoted to the positions of general manager of the Madagascar Hilton and then moved on to the opening of the Yaoundé Hilton in the Cameroon in a similar position.

As one of the first general managers for Disney, he was successful in the early days of the famous Paris theme park and then joined Kempinski, where he was general manager of hotels in Bombay and Beijing.

In the latter, he also ran the Crowne Plaza and later the Crowne Plaza in Jinan.

After a short period of time in a private enterprise Newberry joined the Aga Khan Development Network as general manager of their property in Kabul, the Serena Hotel.

His latest position before joining Corinthia Hotels was that of general manager of the Leela Kempinski in Mumbai, India.

The Corinthia Hotel Khartoum was an architectural masterpiece that was not only a distinct landmark, but also the benchmark for luxurious corporate hospitality in Khartoum.

It offered service and sophistication in a building conceived to combine form with function and high technology with efficiency. The hotel complex sits close to where the Blue and White Niles meet and at the centre of Khartoum’s commercial, business and administrative districts.

The Corinthia Hotel Khartoum – Burj Al Fateh, was managed on behalf of its owners, the Libyan Arab Foreign Investment Company (LAFICO).

Commenting on Newberry’s appointment, Corinthia Hotels CEO & MD Tony Potter said: “Having established our luxury Corinthia Hotels brand in mainland Europe and beyond, Christopher’s vast international experience in the travel sector will no doubt help us establish the Corinthia name in this part of the world as well as we seek to further broaden our operational base with a presence in more exotic destinations such as this, the thriving capital of Sudan, the largest country in Africa and one of its fastest-growing economies.

“Together with our existing Corinthia Hotel in Tripoli, Libya and our planned Corinthia hotel and resort in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, our presence here in Khartoum gives our luxury brand a wider and more colourful dimension,” Potter insisted.

Shows how what Sudanese illegal immigrants say about escaping from their country are a lot of blatant lies. How would Corinthia invest in Sudan if the situation was as pictured by illegal immigrants?
