The works on the Coast Road have been described as a “blessing in disguise” by environment minister Leo Brincat who today explained that despite the road upgrade took up land which was previously used as a recreational area, the park will be extended by 3,000 square meters.

Speaking during a visit to the Parks and Initiatives Directorate in Ta Qali, Brincat said that government was currently working on an afforestation national policy and was in talks with Israeli authorities over the exchange of expertise and best practices.

“Afforestation projects achieve three goals; the embellishment of the place, they reduce the effect of climate change and offer a recreational space for families,” he said.

Turning to the Salina Park extension, Brincat said that the Prime Minister had approved the allocation of €330,000 as compensation for the impact the Coast Road upgrade had on the park and works on extending the park would commence in the coming weeks.

“We thought that we would be negatively impacted by the works but its a blessing in disguise as we’ll extend and improve the facilities and make the park a safer place.”

He added that the park will have new playing facilities for children which will replace the current facilities which are inadequate and unsafe, while new picnic benches and gazebos will be erected.

Moreover 100 indigenous trees will be planted while a new lighting system will be installed allowing people to enjoy the park for longer hours.
