Rapper Hooligan burst onto the Maltese hip hop scene with his song Originali Bhali. But his recent work, now styled as Hooli, displays a more introspective side to the loveable rogue

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?

Press ‘snooze’ on my phone’s alarm a couple of times (sometimes even more).

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Live while you can.

What do you never leave the house without?

Mainly wallet, phone, and my watch.

The release of all of my albums so far…

Vodka.

To never underestimate myself.

My better half…

Who’s your inspiration?

Snoop Dogg. I just love his style. He has been in hip hop for over 25 years and is still evolving.

What has been your biggest challenge?

My first album, ‘Originali Bhali’. It was the very first Maltese hip hop album and back then only a handful of people believed in it.

If you weren’t a rapper, what would you be doing?

The President (laughs).

Do you believe in God?

Yes, of course.

If you could have dinner with any person, dead or alive, who would it be?

Snoop Dogg.

What’s your worst habit?

Smoking.

What are you like when you’re drunk?

Surely more talkative, the rest my partner knows better…

Who would you have play you in a film?

Vin Diesel or Dwayne Johnson.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?

Lies, jealousy and hypocrisy.

What music would you have played at your funeral?

My upcoming song ‘Dak iz-Zmien’, ‘Meta l-Qanpiena Ddoqq’ and ‘My Way’ by Frank Sinatra.

What is your most treasured material possession?

It’s a secret.

What is your earliest memory?

As early as three years I used to pretend to sing using anything as a microphone.

When did you last cry, and why?

Last World Cup when England lost to Croatia.

Again Snoop Dogg… by now you should know why.

What’s your favourite food?

Sushi.

Who’s your favourite person on social media right now?

Gabehash on YouTube.

If you could travel in time, where would you go?

I would opt to stay where I am. I just love it.

What book are you reading right now?

I rarely read books.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Superman’s powers… I’d call myself Hooliman.

What’s one thing you want to do before you die?

Have a drink with an extra-terrestrial.

What music are you listening to at the moment?

Any genre, depends on the mood.

In the shower or when you’re working out, what do you sing/listen to?

In the shower I usually listen to various playlists on YouTube, at the gym whatever they play.

Your lyrics are sometimes considered controversial, what motivates you to write your songs?

Different real-life experiences spark my thoughts and feelings into lyrics. I’m loyal to my fans, they keep asking for more so I keep on doing what I do best.

If you could write a song with any artist, who would you choose?

I would definitely choose Snoop of course.

Being a mama’s boy my favourite one is ‘Ittra lil Ommi’.
