CCTV speeding tickets down by 55% since 2009
Birkirkara, St Julian's and Paola witness sharp decrease in CCTV speeding fines since 2009.
The number of speeding tickets issued from CCTV and speed camera footage decreased by 55% in the five-year period between 2009 and 2013.
In 2009, the total number of speeding tickets issued from CCTV footage amounted to 61,260, whilst 2013 witnessed a total of 27,556 - a decrease of 55%.
The number of such offences has been on a steady decrease since 2009 with the years 2010, 2011 and 2012 seeing 51,318, 40,094, and 37,055 such fines issued, respectively.
Whilst some localities such as Attard, Pietà, Gzira and Sliema reported an increase of such offences, the majority of the localities around Malta witnessed a steady decrease in the issuing of such tickets.
In 2009 in Birkirkara, there were a total of 12,153 CCTV tickets issued but by 2013 there was a decrease of more than 75% to 3014.
Luqa witnessed 846 such offences five years ago but only 46 over the course of 2013.
Last year in St Julians, there were 5755 tickets issued - a sharp drop when compared to the 12,261 issued in 2009.
Other localities which witnessed a high reduction of such offences include St Paul's Bay which saw the 709 offences drop to 122 (a decrease of 82.3%), Zejtun's 7600 issuing of tickets in 2009 to 1,530 (a decrease of 80%) and Paola which in 2009 reported 2,518 CCTV speeding offences but only 72 over the last calendar year (a decrease of 97%).
