Man charged in court after attacking officer at police station

The 36-year-old was charged with causing slight injury to a policeman, obstruction of duty and breaching the peace

A man accused of attacking a policeman inside a police station was released on bail, this morning.

36-year-old Joseph Zammit was arraigned before Magistrate Marseanne Farrugia, charged with causing slight injury to a policeman, obstruction of duty and breaching the peace. He was also charged with being a relapser.

Inspector Robert Vella told the court how, in the early hours of yesterday morning, police had broken up an alcohol-fuelled argument between the accused and his partner, after which they had taken them both to Marsa Police station for a talking to.

At one point, however, Zammit had lashed out and hit a police constable who had been trying to calm him down, slightly injuring the officer.  Zammit pleaded guilty to all charges.

He was released on bail against a personal guarantee of €5,000 and ordered not to communicate with his partner until she has testified.
