Lost Maltese hiker rescued in Scottish Highlands

A Maltese man was at the centre of international rescue efforts after becoming lost in the Scottish Highlands.

The man, who had been trekking, had called up a friend in Malta to tell her that he had gotten lost and inclement weather hindered his efforts to return home.

The woman informed local police, who made contact with Scottish authorities thanks to the Sirene Bureau.

A few hours later, the man called his friend in Malta again, reporting that he could hear a helicopter in the distance. The weather forced the helicopter to return to base and a mountain rescue team was dispatched.

The hiker was found safe and well some time later.
