A Gambian teenager has been jailed and fined by a court after he admitted to importing 200g of cannabis.

19-year-old Sheriffo Kinteh, who holds an Italian ID card, was arrested after the drugs were found on his arrival on the catamaran from Sicily on 1 October. Magistrate Doreen Clarke was told that the drugs were found in circumstances denoting that they were not intended for his personal use.

The court, after taking into account several factors, balanced against Kinteh's clean police conduct felt that a custodial sentence was merited. The Gambian was handed a three-year jail term and ordered to pay a €500 fine.

Inspector Jonathan Cassar prosecuted. Lawyer Mark Mifsud Cutajar was defence counsel.
