A 26-year-old motorcyclist, Matthew Azzopardi, has died in a crash in Mosta late yesterday evening.

The Mosta resident, driving a Suzuki motorcycle, was involved in a crash which took place at 9:50pm in Vjal l-Indipendenza, together with an Isuzu pick-up driven by a 39-year-old man from Dingli.

In a lengthy, emotional Facebook post, Azzopardi’s brother said he “had to die like that, happy doing whatever you loved doing the most and you did not suffer at all.”

The relative described Azzopardi as being liked by everyone, with a charismatic smile.

“Your smile will be remembered until the very day I die…I am sure that you are here, with us, consoling us and being supportive of us like you have always been, especially in the tough times,” he wrote.

Members from the Civil Protection Department and a medical team were called on the scene to assist the motorcyclist, who had been pinned under the pick-up truck. Azzopardi was hospitalised to receive treatment but was later pronounced dead.

A magisterial inquiry has been launched.
