Divorce is civil right, not to be decided by referendum - Alfred Sant

Former Labour prime minister Alfred Sant has stressed that divorce is a civil right, and that “it’s a mistake” to have it decided by referendum.

Speaking on Radio Malta programme ‘Ghandi x’Nghid’ the former labour leader recalled how his short-lived government between 1996 and 1998 had attempted to “strengthen” the family.

According to Sant, his government’s plan was also aiming for the “consideration of divorce” and lamented that the “genuine effort” had led to damaging campaign against him.

"Life goes on," Alfred Sant shrugged.

He insisted that as a civil right, divorce must be decided by parliament, adding that minority right must be respected and that he never agreed with referenda.

If Alfred Sant believes that the divorce issue should not be decided by a referendum, why did he support Labour's motion calling for a referendum?

In an ideal Malta, Dr Sant would make the perfect Prime Minister. The Nationalists had a field day with Dr Sant precisely because he is so alien to the culture of ' qdusija u qohob' il-forte' tal-leaders Nazzjonalisti '! Quoting Leonardo Sciascia in 'Giorno della civetta': the social hierarchy of Sicily would perfectly fit the local administrative and executive scene: we have: ' omini, (endangered species) mezzi omini, ominicchi, pigliaculo e quaquaraqua'!

Mr. Mifsud, Did we live through the same years when Alfred Sant was PM? My impression and that of the majority of the Maltese was that he got very little right. I never doubted his personal honesty and intelligence but in Government he proved an abysmal failure. His commission on the strengthening of the family was a good initiative but far from 'Dr. Sant was always right.'

Dr. Sant was always right, for he had the required forsight, qualifications, honesty and genuinity, but regrettably people envied him for being so superior to them. Malta lost and not Dr. Sant. What a pity.

Dr Sant, you are absoutely right. However as I have no other alternative I shall queue up behind the nuns, priests and others who follow the mantle "zwieg bla divorzju" in the hope that my vote of "yes to divorce" miay make a difference.

"I find Parliament is making a mockery of so called democracy and paying little attention to the people's thinking in this country." (Robin Huud) So true! Spot on!
avatar
Yes - 100% correct. It is such a pity that Alfred Sant's government lasted for such a short period.

As usual. Alfred Sant is right.

The Church has every right to tell and direct its flock on Divorce but when it comes to civil divorce like civil marriage its must be considered a civil right and ones individual conscience does not come into it. Holding this referendum is a waste of time and tax payer's money. Why do we have elected members of parliament elected by the people themselves? When we came to majority important issues like the Lisbon treaty no referendum was held and not even when we adopted the Euro. I find Parliament is making a mockery of so called democracy and paying little attention to the people's thinking in this country.
