S&P ‘concerned about Labour’s phantom proposal’ for gas, Gonzi claims

Prime Minister on the warpath as he tells voters S&P downgrade is ‘all Opposition’s fault’

Lawrence Gonzi is insisting that a credit rating downgrade is Labour's fault.

Lawrence Gonzi has told voters that credit rating agency Standard & Poor's had praised the government's effort to secure Enemalta's financial position, but were worried about the future of the state energy company "after hearing Labour's phantom proposal", which he said has been discredited by all experts.

In an attempt at driving home the view that Malta's downgrade by S&P to BBB+ was entirely down to the Opposition's vote against the 2013 budget, Gonzi today skirted issues of government debt and Enemalta losses pointed out by the credit rating agency, and instead claimed S&P were now "worried" over Labour plans for a new LNG power station and terminal, which Labour claims will cut the cost of energy generation drastically.

Although a draft version of the S&P report does not contain any reference to the Labour proposal for an LNG power station, the prime minister yet again blamed Labour leader Joseph Muscat for a downgrade of the country's sovereign credit rating.

Speaking in Hamrun during one of the PN's 'Int u l-Prim Ministru' events, Gonzi skirted issues such as government debt and losses at Enemalta which formed part of the rationale for the S&P downgrade of Malta's credit status to BBB+, and instead focused on the fact that his budget had not been approved.

"When in America the two sides could not agree on a budget, S&P downgraded their credit rating. The same thing happened in Malta, because the 2013 budget failed to pass, and S&P published a report saying that Malta's credit rating must be downgraded as has happened in other countries. This is not what I think they said - this is what they wrote," Gonzi insisted.

The S&P report makes reference to the fact that Malta's parliament was officially dissolved after Gonzi lost a confidence vote when the budget was not approved by a majority in the House, when the Opposition was joined by Nationalist MP Franco Debono in voting down the budget.

"If the opposition had been reasonable and sincerely had our national interest at heart, Muscat would have followed the Italian example and voted for the budget," Gonzi said.

As a sudden downpour pushed the crowds further in under the tent where Gonzi hosted his electorate, the prime minister kept insisting that Muscat should have approved the government's budget and then vote against other ministerial votes.

No mention was made of other reasons in the S&P report such as the low level of female participation in the workforce, or the high indebtedness of the private sector.

Gonzi instead boasted of having created 20,000 jobs thanks to his policy for sound finances and job-saving efforts inside Maltese factories, which allowed the government to weather the financial crisis - a factor noted by S&P when it gives credit to the resilience of Maltese political and economic institutions.

But the prime minister could not fail to draw yet more comparisons between Muscat and predecessor Alfred Sant. "Don't repeat the same mistakes of the past. In 1996, Muscat was right next to Alfred Sant when the MLP replaced VAT with 33 taxes."

During the discussion, hosted by Joseph Bonello, Alex Mangion, and Austin Sammut, Gonzi paid tribute to Hamrun-born veteran MP and former minister Antoine Mifsud Bonnici, whom he called "a model politician."

I reiterate that Il-Gonz has lost it, and in so complete a fashion that it is sad to witness! Mind you, all this is out of solidarity with his prime cuc Malti. He does not want to see Tonju by the wayside all by himself. No worries, he will get his wish by June/July 2013.

Malta is witnessing the results of what lawyers the like of GonziPN-type manage to accomplish with their experiments in the economy. gods like the ones within GonziPN think that they are infallible. But their results is for us to enjoy, and these outcomes will linger for quite some years. The presence of these lawyers is an insult to all local economists, who unfortunately prefer too much to lie low.

Only one observation is valid in this case. Desperate people say the stupidest things. Pathetic Lawrence, go down like a PM, with dignity, not as a lying brat.
avatar
This is the most blatant lie from the GOnziPN side. A credit rating report is done over a span of months in which S&P send its auditors to investigate, question and analyse documents. Surely before last week their report was already compiled. GonziPN stop lying and tell us what your proposals are. Up to now we just scaremongering and no proposal.

Someone should ask Lawrence Gonzi whether S&P are not concerned about the multitude of litigations on behalf of the people who suffer ill health due to the use of Heavy Fuel Oil?

And the song goes, "Mhux jien, mhux jien, mhux jien mama', le, le mhux jien.....". U hallina Gonz b'min trid tidhaq?

It takes a human to make a mistake but a gentleman to admit it. DR. Gonzi blaming the LP for your mistakes is verging on the unbelievable. Do you seriously think that the Maltese people are so stupid? Also i wonder if you loose the election and the LP presented your budget for approval , would you vote in favor ?

No, Dr Gonzi. S&P are concerned about your mishandling of every item in the political and financial cupboard. Who do you think you're kidding, you and your lot?

I'm amazed that Gonzi still thinks that the Maltese are a bunch of stupid bumpkins who cannot even read. His interpretation of S%P's report is an insult to our intelligence. What worries me is that the desperation manifestly lurking behind this puerile defence indicates that our problems are even more serious than we think. His comparison to the Italian parliament is null since that was a technical government endorsed by all main Parties. Muscat demonstrated responsability by reassuring national and international agencies that he would support all the positive elements of the budget whilst registering his non-confidence n the Government by voting against the budget. S&P's could well have issued a harsher evaluation if they hadn't noted the Oppositions commitment to the National interest and their remark about "..malta's strong political institutions". GonziPN's scaremongering strategy shows that the idol they adore has not only feet but also a head of clay.

...... and Dr Gonzi and the Nationalist Party spent more than a week and all their energy fighting off this "phantom proposal." !!! At the same time not realizing that that up to now the real "phantom proposal" is that announced by their leader in Germany, when he promised that energy tariffs will go down and up to now nothing has been said about how this is going to be done.

Maybe gonzi can tell us where and on which page/s S&P does so. A snake might change its skin but never its habits. Lie, lie, lie.

Coming from a man who knows Parliamentary life and procedures inside out, Gonzi's claim that it is all PL's fault is as irresponsible as it is barmy and infantile. A man's a man for assuming responsibility, but this person is at his best when he tries to do houdini acts. Malta does not need escapologists -not now, for heaven's sake!

Mela l-fatti huma dawn: last week Tonio Fenech praises himself because EU stopped deficit procedures against Malta; last week Gonzi gets a certificate from Merkel for his great feat: finanzi fis-sod; three days ago S. and Poor's downgrades Malta' finances' fis-sod' and GonzPN is suddenly caught with his pa.nts down! 360 degrees roundabout turn and now, a week after blames Dr Muscat! The report by Standard and Poor's was not written in one day dear Mr Prime Minister, like the KPMG report, must have took months to write and weeks to conclude, well before your own deputies deserted you in Parliament! PN never voted in favour of a Pl's budget, and that's how it should be to protect democracy and minorities; so please stop beating about the bush, and yes stop lying!EneMalta, and this little barren rock in the middle of the Med, is not the Brazilian company!

MIRACLES. OH MIRACLES. GONZI HAS RECEIVED ANOTHER MESSAGE FROM ANGELIK'S MADONNA THAT S&P WILL IMMEDIATELY RAISE THE RATING ONCE GONZIPN GRAPS POWER AGAIN - JUST LIKE THE OTHER MESSAGE THAT THE DIVORCE BILL WILL NOT PASS THROUGH PARLIAMENT. The fact that S&P has indicated its concern over the long term prospects for Malta in the light of the massive debt of not only the Nation but also of the other Government entities like EneMalta. But of course the debt of EneMalta was brought about by the opposition in just 10 days of campaigning. Of course the Finanzi fis-Sod LIE was brought about by Labour voting against the budget. GONZIPN keeps lying to the people by stating that no expert backed the PL energy proposal when even the one single solitary expert they brought said it was very possible that the PL proposal will work well - and he was not even given the right data!!!! When are we going to see a Prime Minister who speaks the truth to the People - only after March 10 with a total change of scene and a new dynamic Government under the Prime Ministership of Joseph Muscat. He has shown us how strongly he leads and how strongly he has prepared his team. Only under his leadership can S&P increase their ratings again - let us hope that will be soon for Malta's sake.
