‘I could not conform to the PN ideology’ – Godfrey Farrugia

Beloved as a general practitioner and supported by thousands when serving for seven years as independent mayor of Zebbug way back in 1993, Godfrey Farrugia publicly announced that he will be contesting the general elections with the Labour Party.

Farrugia is the same doctor who partially lost his sight nine years ago when attempting to separate a fighting couple in front of his clinic.

Brought up in a family with a low political profile, with a Labour father and a mother who claimed to be Nationalist but "always voted responsibly" the GP states that the turning point for him was three years ago.

"I said enough is enough! I believed in the European Union and still believe in it. In those days I felt closer to the Nationalist ideology... but things changed," Farrugia said.

"At that time I believed that Eddie Fenech Adami was going to adopt the best things of Mintoff, Boffa and Borg Olivier. But this did not happen. The negotiations with the European Union did not even recognise the fundamental elements of what makes us Maltese."

"I am comfortable in the Labour Party as it is a reconciliatory party."

Dr Godfrey Farrugia is partner to Labour candidate Dr Marlene Farrugia and for the past months spearheaded the Għaqda Nazzjonali tal-Armar tal-Festi fit-Toroq in the national debate with the Curia on the future of Maltese feasts.
