‘Empty vessels’ also in the Church – Bishop Mario Grech
In a hard hitting homily for the feat of Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu, Gozo Bishop Mario Grechreflected on the ‘empty vessels’ in the Church as a parallel with those in the Ca’naan wedding parable while also lambasting politicians for ‘ideological poverty’ and the media for ‘spreading disorder and discord’.
Bishop Grech said that we are currently “suffering from spiritual poverty, a drop in values, a scarcity of high ideals, an ethical deficit and a spiritual refusal”. All these deficiencies are currently reflected in personal life, the family and society in general which is suffering from ‘transgressive evasion, pessimism, unhappiness and frustration’, Bishop Grech added.
In a faintly hinted broadside at politicians, he said that politics is a noble art but occasionally, the message given out by politicians suffers from ‘poverty of noble ideals which should serve as an inspiration to the nation”.
Bishop Grech said that journalism and the media are also important professions but occasionally these are used to spread false and malicious ideas, creates disorder and manipulates the mind as well as character assassination.
He also deplored the ‘empty vessels in the Church’ which occurred when those who were supposed to be full of Christ’s message, are instead ‘filled with rubbish’ adding that tradition and religious celebration are not a guarantee for evangelical and human content.
