Fireworks manufacturer charged with injuring young spectator at festival
A fireworks manufacturer this morning registered a ’not guilty’ plea, after he was charged with causing grievious injuries to a young boy through negligence during the fireworks festival that was held in Floriana in April last year.
Manwel Farrugia, 68 from Lija, who is a licensed fireworks manufacturer, was participating in the festival for St. Michael’s Fireworks Factory, when a splinter from one of his manufactured Catherine wheels flew off and hit 13 year old Kurt Conner in the face.
The boy, who was rushed to hospital in an ambulance, suffered grievious injuries to his face and an eye.
Meanwhile, a Floriana local council representative that organized the festival, told the court that the council had all necessary police permits and all conditions were abided.
The crowd that attended the event was kept behind barriers at a distance from where the fireworks were being set off.
