Opposition to meet MCESD over citizenship scheme

PN leader Simon Busuttil to discuss citizenship scheme with MCESD members.

Leader of the Opposition Simon Busuttil will tomorrow meet members of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD) to explain the PN's stand on the controversial citizenship scheme.

During the meeting which will be held in Parliament, Busuttil is expected to explain the PN's opposition to the scheme which was recently revamped following a series of inconclusive talks between the PN and government.

The revamped citizenship scheme will require wealthy foreigners to invest at least €1.15 million in order to obtain a Maltese passport. Applicants must also invest in property and government bonds and shares before being granted citizenship.

However, the opposition insists that the scheme remains one of sale rather than investment. Moreover, the PN has pledged to repeal the scheme if it is in government.
