The start of the MEP election campaigns is extensively covered by all the newspapers. Both leaders addressed rallies yesterday and both based their pitch to voters on the government's first year in power. The PN's slogan is 'Malta Ahjar' while the Labour camp's slogan reads 'Energija Pozittiva'.

The Times of Malta

The Times today ran an opinion piece by  Lawrence Gonzi, former PM and leader of the Nationalist party, who addresses the subject of adoption by gay people. He writes that his comments on the issue have been quoted in an "unacceptable" manner. He goes on to say that the civil unions bill was initially drafted by a PN government and had the adoption clause not been included, Gonzi says that the PN parliamentary group would have had no problem with voting in favour.

In-Nazzjon

A shop owner has appeared in court after he allegedly blackmailed an elderly customer. Raymond Borg is accused of blackmailing Anna Maria Cauchi after he caught her stealing goods from his shop in Sliema, in November 2012 and earlier this month. He demanded €1000 in 2012 and €500 this month from Cauchi so he would not report the theft to the police.

L-Orizzont

A man was arrested yesterday in connection with a shooting in a Hamrun bar that caused injuries to two people. The 31-year old injured a youth, 19, from Santa Lucija and a 38-year old man from Hamrun. The two were not known to the police until they turned up at Mater Dei for treatment for their slight injuries.

The Malta Independent

PN deputy leader for party affairs Beppe Fenech Adami and MP Claudio Grech have denied claims that members of the Opposition would have resigned if the party had voted in favour of last week's civil union bill. The Independent reports that previous comments made by Fenech Adami had been misrepresented in another newspaper and when he was contacted, Fenech Adami set the record straight. He states that neither he nor any other MP had any intention of resigning over Monday's vote.
