Bishop tells soldiers that they need ‘Christ’s protection’

Apostolic Administrator praises soldiers' work towards 'the protection of Malta and democracy'

Apostolic Administrator Charles Scicluna reminded members of the Malta Armed Forces that, while their work is important, they also require the protection of Christ.

“Dear members of the Armed Forces, I call on you to never neglect the Lord,” Scicluna said during a homily on the occasion of the laying up of the army’s old colours. “I encourage you to seek his healing through confession, to search for his shelter through the Eucharist, and to never be ashamed to move closer towards him so as to listen to his word.”

The bishop praised the army’s search-and-rescue work in the ‘perilous’ Mediterranean sea as a battle between David and Goliath.

“I pray that you will never lose heart in your battle in favour of solidarity and the dignity of our brothers.

“In the name of Christ, I thank you for everything you do that is in favour of the protection of our country and the protection of democracy, which is the foundation of the Republic of Malta,” Scicluna said. “I hope that your missions are always in favour of the protection of the dignity of human being, whoever they may be, whatever their skin colour is, whatever their religion is, whoever they are.”

“Your missions must sometimes include the use of force but, God willing, they will never result in violence that damages people’s dignity. We need your courage, your sacrifices and your protection. I hope that we can continue finding shelter in your work, while we will continue performing our duty of praying for you and supporting you.”
