An EU summit, due to be held tomorrow, will see member states presenting options for immediate action on the worsening situation in the Mediterranean. One such option is a mission modelled on the anti-piracy Operation Atalanta, a mission against piracy off the Somalian coast. 

The Times of Malta

A boy, thought to be no older than 14 and of Somalian or Eritrean provenance, is among the corpses recovered and currently awaiting burial in the Mater Dei morgue. The average age of the deceased is estimated to be about 24 years.

This newspaper reports that five Gozitan soldiers will by transfered to work in Malta as from next month. They are reported to have been told that this was due to the exigencies of the Armed Forces but there are suspicions that political placements were the actual cause.

The EU will have to face a complex network of smugglers in Libya if it is to stop migrant deaths at sea. A thriving illegal economy runs alongside the trafficking enterprises, making it difficult to control.
