In the Press: Cassar resigns from parliament

Nationalist MP Joe Cassar resigned from the PN parliamentary group yesterday, in the wake of accusations that he had accepted gifts from businessman Joe Gaffarena. Opposition leader Simon Busuttil accepted Cassar's resignation and called on PM Joseph Muscat to demand the resignation of parliamentary secretary of lands Michael Falzon.

As part of security measures related to two international summits - the Valletta Migration Summit and the CHOGM - Malta's participation in the Schengen agreement is to be suspended. In a statement, the government said that the announcement did not come from official sources and thus the regulations were still in force.

Noel Sciberras, who spent 47 days as a hostage after being kidnapped in Tajoura, returned to Malta in good health, despite the trauma he suffered at the hands of his captors. Sciberras said he was unsure at the time if he would survive the ordeal.

Simon Busuttil could not take a decision on Joe Cassar, despite that decision being obvious, the Labour party said in response to the news that MP Joe Cassar had resigned from parliament.

The government's decision to appeal a court ruling that confirmed the Ombudsman's right to investigate army complaints is 'unwise', ombusdman Joseph Said Pullicino said, and would only serve to delay investigations.
