Bishop Nikol Cauchi critical but stable in Intensive Care Unit

LATEST UPDATE: Bishop Emeritus Nikol Cauchi’s condition is stable, Health Authorities report - but he is still in critical condition and is being managed at the Intensive Care Unit.

Health Authorities also reported that “his pneumonia is improving with the use of antibiotics.  He is also in Heart Failure. His breathing is being supported by a mechanical ventilator.”

Gozo Bishop Mario Grech has called for prayers for Bishop Emeritus Nikol Cauchi who was transferred to Mater Dei Hospital in Malta after spending a night in an induced coma at Gozo's General Hospital. 

Bishop Nikol Cauchi was hospitalised yesterday evening and said to be in a serious critical condition, and was placed  in an induced coma at Gozo's general hospital. He is said to be suffering from a serious heart ailment. 

Cauchi who is 81, was ordained as a bishop in 1967. Born in Gharb in 1929, Cauchi is remembered for his eloquent sermons. 

Still active, he was last reported by MaltaToday in July that:  “divorce was wrong, and people knew it was not a solution to family problems, but rather complicated matters.”

In a statement, Gozo Bishop Mario Grech has called for prayers for Bishop Cauchi.

"I urge all for prayers as an act of duty, given that Bishop Cauchi has led the Gozo diocese for more than 38 years."

He announced a prayer vigil and adoration at the Gozo Seminary for the religious community in Gozo, while also inviting the general public to attend the function to be held at 7:30 pm.
