Green party youth branch calls for national carpooling initiatives

Alternattiva Demokratika Zghazagh encourage implementation of carpooling initiatives on a national level

Green party youth branch Alternattiva Demokratika Zghazagh has urged authorities to implement national carpooling initiatives.

Welcoming the university students’ council, KSU’s initiative to introduce carpooling at the University of Malta, the group said that although such measures may require some time in order to become more effective, they will ultimately result in a decrease in the number of cars at University.

“The carpooling scheme at University is a step in the right direction. Such a measure should also be implemented at a national level,” ADZ chairperson Andrea Cassar said.

KSU recently launched a pilot project to incentivise car pooling on campus, reserving for them the most central car park on campus.

The car park can take up a maximum of 35 cars, and security personnel will now be stationed outside it between 7am and 1pm to check that each car contains a driver, at least two passengers, and two university parking permits.

ADZ further encouraged KSU to introduce more carpooling initiatives in order to reduce traffic around University.

“Public transport must be more frequent, more reliable, follow timetables and faster by more direct routes. Every car owner should have a proper alternative to their car through reliable public transport,” Cassar said, stressing the need for pubic transport to change in order to achieve real changes in national traffic levels.
